We have a new donation that is the cats meow and the bees knees! We have a 1860s vintage Starrett Walking Beam Food Chopper also known as a Starrett Steamboat Chopper. It is currently located in the new big red Tractor building. Ned T has restored it to working condition and it is really neat.
Here is the interesting history fact. This machine was invented by Laroy Sunderland Starrett of Athol Mass. Starrett went door to door selling this walking beam food chopper/hasher before he started the L.S. Starrett Company in 1880. If you are a machinist or tool maker you are very familiar with precision hand tools made by this very big American company.
Off the coast near Cape Cod there is a ship wreck of a steam ship that sank during a big storm and there are photos of all that is left including a clear view of the walking beam which transferred power from the steam engine to the giant paddle wheels. The name of the ship is Portland. Stop by and give our walking beam machine a couple of turns.
